What do you think of when you hear the word, “coach?” Does an image of an athletic coach or a drill sergeant yelling at you come to mind? That paradigm may work for some people, but most of us don’t respond well to someone emphatically telling us what to do, especially when we already know what to do, we just need a little clarity and perspective. Perhaps I misread you, but I get the sense that you respond better with someone who works with you, and includes you as a collaborative partner to help you reach your goals. Meditation

Now that neuroscience has developed to the point where technology can show us what is happening inside our brains while we are meditating, we see that different forms of meditation enhance different areas of our brain. For example, people who practice mantra meditations, such as Transcendental Meditation (TM) have more developed language centers in their brains, while mindfulness meditation helps to develop the areas of the brain responsible for focus and attention. Far from “sitting around, doing nothing,” mindfulness meditation can help you counteract the stresses you face in the normal course of your life.

Public Speaking

Have you ever wondered if face-to-face meetings would be replaced by virtual meetings, on-line? While many meetings are conducted via teleconference or computer, people still yearn to meet one another in person. Many of these meetings benefit from a speaker who can function as a master of ceremonies, as a keynote speaker, or as an expert on a relevant meeting topic. With almost 28 years as a Navy Officer, a former Learning Annex instructor, and an experienced member of Toastmasters, International, I have a fair amount of public speaking experience.

Workshops

A few years before the Internet was invented I taught a monthly 3-hour Learning Annex workshop entitled “101 Ways to Make Money with Your Computer.” It was a very popular, highly interactive evening. It’s funny that computers and the Internet have become so ubiquitous that no one would even think about giving a workshop like that now.

Even though the subject of my workshops has changed, the workshop format is still a great way to come up to speed on new information while learning how to apply it.
